What is Hot Mix Asphalt?

• Hot Mix Asphalt is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand or gravel bound together by asphalt cement, a product of crude oil.

What is a petromat overlay?

• A petromat overlay is a process in which a polypropylene fabric is applied to existing asphalt that is cracked consistently throughout.  Then an asphalt overlay is placed on the fabric and compacted.  A minimum of 1.5 inches of compacted depth asphalt is the industry standard for petromat overlay.  The use of petromat in an asphalt overlay substantially extends the lifetime if the new paving surface while eliminating the reoccurrence of cracking.

 Why is a Tack Coat needed?

• A tack coat assures a bond between the new asphalt and the existing asphalt.  It provides a "glue" like function.

 What causes potholes?

• Potholes can be caused by a number of factors including thin, weak pavement, poor drainage, and improper or lack of maintenance.

 Why do depressions form on asphalt surfaces?

• Depressions form when uncompacted or saturated sub-grade soils are combined with poorly designed or aging asphalt surfaces.

 What causes cracked asphalt?

• Cracks usually form in asphalt due to aging and poor maintenance.  Vehicular traffic and weather extremes cause asphalt surfaces to expand and contract creating cracks.  It is important to fill and repair these cracks as soon as they form to preserve pavement life.  Additionally, slurry seal should be applied to all pavement surfaces every two years to maintain the waterproofing and flexility characteristics of asphalt.
